‘One perceives the other in a different way than the other perceives him.’
The thing that struck me most in Bratislava was the emotional resonance of its citizens. That here, in this city, the honest emotional values are different than my emotional values. How can I relate to a citizenry when we have nothing in common? How are we related? How do we find these common emotional states?
I come from Rotterdam, a city which strives for, and is known for ‘straight-to-the-point’ communication, where every emotional change stands out: everything is visible. These photographs investigating Slovakian habits give insight into how honest emotions can be perceived as opposite, causing frictions.
Bratislava and Rotterdam actually strive for the same honesty, but within a different set of emotional values.
